engraved ada style room sign with braille, dubai

Engraved and tactile signs planned for the specification

Engraved signs in Dubai can identify rooms, equipment and facilities; tactile signs and Braille identification need a separate, approved specification. A decorative engraved nameplate should not be assumed to satisfy an accessibility requirement simply because lettering is raised or cut into the surface. Start with the approved sign schedule, room list and project standard. A brief may cite the US ADA design standards, but the project team should confirm the applicable Dubai Building Code and consultant details before production.

Engraved room plates and permanent labels

Engraving creates precise, durable information in acrylic, layered engraving laminate or metal. It can suit office names, room numbers, equipment labels, operating instructions and back-of-house identification. The material, contrast, letter size, fixing method and cleaning conditions should be agreed before production. For a coordinated door-sign family, see our room and door signs.

Tactile characters and Braille

Where a project requires tactile characters or Braille, supply the governing standard or consultant detail. For projects governed by the Dubai Building Code, tactile characters must be raised in high embossment, not engraved; an engraved visual label is a separate element, not a substitute. Character height, spacing, dot pattern, contrast, surface glare and mounting position can all affect the specification. Al Burooj can manufacture from approved artwork and sign schedules, but a generic illustration is not evidence of compliance. Our accessibility and Braille signage page explains the related service.

Directories, directional signs and floor identification

Room plaques often form part of a wider visitor-navigation system. Directory panels, floor numbers and directional signs should use consistent names, arrows, colours and hierarchy. For buildings with several destinations, compare the room-sign schedule with the wayfinding signage plan before artwork is approved.

From sign schedule to production and installation

1. Share the project information

Send the room or sign schedule, quantities, dimensions, approved English and Arabic wording, drawings, site photographs and full location. Identify the standard named by the consultant and note whether the signs are for a new fit-out, a replacement programme or an occupied building. Mark estimates clearly; final dimensions and fixing positions should be checked before fabrication.

2. Agree the material and sign construction

Choose the substrate, finish, colour contrast, engraved or raised elements, tactile details, Braille requirements and fixing approach. Matte acrylic, layered laminate and brushed metal produce different weights, edges and visual character. External exposure, frequent cleaning or public contact may require a different specification from a decorative office plate.

3. Approve the proof and itemised quotation

Check every room name, number, arrow, pictogram and translation. The proof should identify dimensions, colours, material, tactile components and mounting location. Ask whether the quotation includes artwork preparation, samples, delivery, removal of old signs, access equipment and installation. Approval should be based on the written specification, not only on a visual mock-up.

4. Coordinate production and fitting

Production begins after the artwork and scope are approved. Before installation, confirm access hours, wall or door finishes, drilling restrictions and any building-management requirements. At handover, compare the completed signs with the approved schedule and identify any cleaning or maintenance guidance relevant to the chosen material.

What affects ADA-specified and engraved-sign pricing?

Price depends on the number and size of signs, material, engraving depth, colour filling, raised characters, Braille or tactile components, bilingual artwork, quantity of unique messages, fixing method and site access. Repeating one approved room-sign design has a different production scope from a one-off metal directory or a mixed sign family.

Lead time also depends on artwork approval, sample requirements, material availability, quantity and site readiness. Share the required date at enquiry stage, but request a confirmed schedule only after the specification and final artwork are agreed.

ADA references and UAE project requirements

ADA is a United States accessibility framework, not a blanket UAE certification. A Dubai or UAE project may reference ADA criteria, another international standard, a consultant specification or requirements issued by a relevant local authority. The client and responsible project consultant should confirm which document governs the site. Al Burooj can quote and manufacture against the supplied, approved specification without making an unsupported universal-compliance claim.

Common questions

Can engraved lettering count as tactile identification in Dubai?

An engraved visual label alone should not be treated as a tactile sign. For a project governed by the Dubai Building Code, tactile characters are specified as raised, high-embossment characters rather than engraved ones. Ask the appointed accessibility consultant to confirm the applicable sign detail, Braille and mounting requirements before production.

Can engraved signs include Arabic and English?

Yes. Supply approved wording for both languages and confirm spelling, reading order and relative size before fabrication. Translation and registered-name decisions should remain with the client or appointed language professional.

Which materials can be engraved?

Common options include layered engraving laminate, acrylic and metal or metal-finish plates. The right choice depends on the finish, contrast, contact, cleaning, mounting surface and indoor or outdoor conditions.

Do you provide installation?

Installation can be included where agreed. Share the site, access conditions, fixing surface and working-hour restrictions so the installation scope can be identified in the quotation.

What should I send for a useful quote?

Provide the sign list, quantities, dimensions, languages, required standard, preferred material, site photographs, full address and target date. Include the consultant detail when accessibility requirements are specified.
