Yacht graphics: graphics that suit the vessel and the brief

Decide whether the work is a clear vessel name, a discreet logo, a larger visual treatment or a temporary sponsor graphic. Give the intended viewing distance and where the boat will normally be seen. The artwork should be checked against each side of the hull, rather than scaled from a flat screen image.

Boat names and registration details

Check the registered vessel name, spelling, placement and any required registration marks with the owner or operator before artwork approval. A decorative name graphic and a legally required marking may have different requirements. For Dubai, a change to a registered vessel name can involve a Dubai Maritime Authority licence or registration amendment; the owner should verify the current procedure for their craft.

Logos, striping and printed hull graphics

Simple cut lettering may suit a name or identifier. Printed graphics can carry colour, gradients and detailed imagery; larger coverage needs panel planning and careful alignment across curves and fittings. Share the original vector logo if available and tell us whether the artwork must match another branded vessel or business asset. If the artwork needs developing, see our creative designing services; confirm the design, marine material and installation scope separately.

Campaign and sponsor graphics

For an event or commercial craft, provide sponsor assets, display dates and the intended removal plan. Check who approves the artwork and any advertising permissions with the marina, vessel operator or relevant authority. Existing paint and older vinyl should be assessed before promising a clean changeover.

Where graphics can be applied

Material choice depends on the substrate, shape, exposure and application zone. Do not assume a film suitable for the visible hull is suitable below the waterline, on an anti-fouling coating or on every gelcoat or painted surface. Avoid obstructing safety equipment, lights, windows, vents, registration marks and service access.

Your boat graphics quote checklist

  • Vessel type, length and make/model if known
  • Marina or yard location and access contact
  • Clear photos of both sides and the target areas
  • Approximate graphic sizes or a marked-up photo
  • Artwork, vessel name and approval requirements
  • Surface finish, old vinyl and launch or event date

Tell us whether the boat is afloat, hauled out or booked for yard time. Availability and fitting conditions are confirmed for each project.

Check the surface before specifying the film

Send close photos of the paint or gelcoat, existing decals, seams, repairs and fittings. A site review may be needed to confirm preparation and adhesion. Surface cleaning, removal of older graphics and any paint correction should appear as separate scope where required. A graphic cannot correct a damaged coating.

Ask for a material and laminate specification suited to the proposed position. 3M’s watercraft application bulletin distinguishes compatible films and discusses contours, surface preparation and application conditions.

Coverage near the waterline, on horizontal areas or around tight curves needs explicit review. Record where the graphic begins and ends, how it meets fittings and where joins may be visible. Above-waterline artwork should not be presented as a below-waterline coating or antifouling treatment.

Plan artwork, access and installation together

Approve the layout on real vessel photos

Mock up both sides and the stern where relevant. Names, logos and stripes should account for asymmetrical hatches, fenders, rails, windows and mooring hardware. Agree the size, colour and exact wording before print. If Arabic and English text is required, have the owner approve both language versions and their order.

Check marina or yard arrangements

Share the vessel location, berth or yard contact, access rules, working hours and whether the craft can be dry and safely reached. Application weather, temperature and surface condition affect the schedule. Afloat work, work at height, power or specialist access must be assessed for the specific job; the presence of a marina address does not confirm that installation can take place there.

Clarify approvals and handover

Before printing, the vessel owner or authorised operator should confirm any required name update, advertising approval, marina permission and display restrictions. A graphics quotation does not grant permission to display an advert. At handover, check placement and spelling against the approved artwork and request the care guidance relevant to the selected material.

What affects the cost and timing?

Price depends on size and coverage, design preparation, film and print specification, surface condition, removal work, access and the number of vessels. Ask for an itemised quote that distinguishes artwork, production, preparation, installation and any travel or yard related costs. A photo based estimate may change after the surface and access are confirmed.

Share launch dates, events and time out of service early. Check the production slot only after artwork, materials, access and any approvals are settled. We cannot promise an installation duration or material lifespan without a defined job and specification.

Boat and yacht graphics questions

Yes, send the exact approved name, vessel photos, preferred position and approximate size. The owner should confirm any registration or licence update and required display markings before artwork is produced.

Do not assume ordinary decorative film is suitable below the waterline or over antifouling coatings. Tell us the exact application area and surface. Material suitability must be checked against current product guidance before any scope is agreed.

Share the berth or yard location and access rules. Afloat fitting depends on safe access, a dry and suitable surface, weather and marina permission. The installation method and location are confirmed after review, not from the address alone.

Send vessel type and length, photos of both sides and the intended area, rough dimensions, artwork, surface condition, current location and target date. Mention existing vinyl, paint repairs, registration or advertising approvals and whether the vessel will be hauled out.

Old graphics and the coating underneath need assessment. Removal and cleaning can be included in a quote when agreed, but paint or gelcoat condition may limit the result. Damage-free removal should not be assumed from photos alone.

Service life depends on the specified film and laminate, exposure, position, vessel use, cleaning and surface preparation. Ask for the current product guidance and written warranty terms for the proposed material; one lifespan cannot be promised for every craft.

Send the sponsor artwork, display dates, placement brief and removal date. The operator should confirm advertising and marina permissions. We can quote the graphic scope once vessel access, surface and approvals are clear.

Send the emirate, marina or yard location and access contact with your brief. Travel, fitting method, permissions and availability outside Dubai are assessed and confirmed for each project.

Cut vinyl lettering suits a vessel name, identifier or simple single-colour shape. A printed decal can carry gradients, photographs or a more detailed logo. Either option still needs sizing against the actual hull, a suitable material specification and a check of any required vessel markings.
